The importance of finding your thing as a developer
Learning how to code will never be easy, that’s for sure. You will find yourself on a road with a lot of big bumps, hard to move, which means you will most likely find yourself overwhelmed and close to giving up every now and then. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you don’t actually give up.
There is one thing you can, and actually need to do, in order to be better prepared for taking on all these challenges you will face. You need to find your thing within coding. You need to figure out which part of coding that makes you jump of joy (OK, at least close to it), the thing that is fun even when it’s really hard, and the thing that gives you these small moments when you feel like a total genious after solving something truly challenging. If you find that special thing, there is a much bigger chance you will hang in there, no matter what kind of coding difficulties you face along the road. It will also make the journey a whole lot more fun, which is of course a reason as good as any to try to find your coding crush as soon as possible.
So, have I found mine yet? Yes, I actually did that quite soon after putting my feet on the route of coding. I’ve got a huge crush on APIs and whenever I get a chance to work with those, I find myself smiling. To make the whole situation even better, I also found another coding love of mine a few weeks after discovering APIs. It turned out React is another favourite of mine. So logic, so structured and so fun to work with, not to mention the endless possibilities it brings. With that said, both APIs and React will throw challenges in front of you, and far from everything will be easy, but it will be fun, and the fascination that you feel for “your things” will make you willing to put in all the effort needed. That’s why you need to find your coding thing, and this is definitely one of those situations where it’s better to do it sooner rather than later. Oh, and once you’ve found it, please don’t forget to let me know what it turned out to be!
